This email was sent to families this morning regarding the Canadian Armed Forces report on the long term care homes that they have been assisting.  It will also be posted to our webpage today.

—————————————–

The Canadian Armed Forces released a report yesterday documenting their findings on five long term care homes at which the military was assisting.  The Premier’s press conference yesterday focused solely on this matter. He has called on the federal government and the Canadian Armed Forces to extend their current mission for at least an additional 30 days. He also announced that one of the deaths has been referred to the Office of the Chief Coroner for investigation.  The report contents are very disturbing and detail serious concerns around infection prevention, safety, staffing and level of care.

There is no doubt this pandemic has hit our sector very hard. We have long been calling for changes to address the serious challenges and deficiencies for some time. As this report shows, COVID-19 has magnified and compounded these challenges like nothing we have ever seen before.  We are heartbroken for any of the individuals who have had to deal with these horrible circumstances.  Serious deficiencies, that are found by Inspectors, need to be addressed by the Ministry, before similar issues are brought up by an outside party such as the military, so that Homes are not in such a state of unreadiness for acute challenges such as this pandemic.

At Fairhaven, our staff continue to work tirelessly to ensure that your family member has access to the highest level of care possible as we all navigate the ongoing pandemic situation to the best of our abilities.  We are grateful that Fairhaven is currently stable and concentrating on the quality of life for Residents who are impacted so greatly by visitor and movement restrictions.

We would like to thank our CUPE, ONA and Administrative staff members, AdvantAge Ontario and Ministry Advisors for their continued dedication and hard work, under challenging circumstances, over the past several months.  Thank you once more for your patience and if you have any questions at all, I encourage you to contact me directly at the contact information below.

Please consider all Fairhaven COVID-19 Employee Bulletins to be official notifications of consultation with the Fairhaven Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
